15.03.2024

The Minister of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of Turkmenistan Begench Gochmollayev and the Director of GIZ in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan Joachim Fritz, with the participation of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Turkmenistan Michael W. Bierhoff, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Ministry trade and foreign economic relations of Turkmenistan within the framework of the regional project “Trade Facilitation in Central Asia” (TFCA) for the period 2024-2026.

On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Regional Project is being implemented by GIZ in partnership with national ministries responsible for trade policy, customs, border control agencies, as well as representatives of the private sector involved in trade in the Central Asia region. The main goal is to develop regional approaches and knowledge, especially in the field of digitalization, aimed at facilitating cross-border trade along regional trade routes.

Begench Gochmollayev confirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to strengthening regional trade cooperation.

In his statement, Ambassador Bierhoff emphasized the importance of intensifying Turkmenistan's trade ties within the region and beyond.

Joachim Fritz noted that with the signing of this Memorandum, Turkmenistan will become the fifth country within the regional project “Trade Facilitation in Central Asia”, which corresponds to the increased interest of countries and companies in the further development of relations between Central Asia and Europe.

In addition, during the visit of the GIZ delegation on March 11-13, the parties discussed the practical implementation of the Memorandum and outlined next steps that are critical to achieving the agreed goals for 2024. The discussions included stakeholders such as representatives of the Agency of Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan, the State Plant Quarantine Service and the private sector.

As the regional TFCA project is implemented, the parties hope to promote joint initiatives that will contribute to the prosperity and growth of cross-border trade in Central Asia.
